Climate Change - How to change the World
Techniques I have found useful in getting people to either change the pattern of their own energy consumption or to advocate for public policies that address environmental threat
I am glad to be able to state here that I am living in a country, Germany, which is already quite active on Climate Change and Sustainability.
Politicians, scientists, more and more Entrepreneurs and population are focused on behaving in favor of the change to the better. We even have a a green party in parliament. Most people are aware that we have to change our behavior and act accordingly. My personal contributions are:
I try to keep my knowledge updated and I already live on a smaller footprint, in a house with clean green energy by using solar energy for heating, having only 3 times daily hot water, producing the energy for warming the water while we are using our fire place. We try to reduce waste and we don't use cars just for fun. We try to use a bike, train or walk in order to avoid to produce CO2. Meanwhile, all people around me are same- minded and we all follow the rules to help our planet to recover. If we meet people who are not yet aware of their personal behavior we explain how to do better and why. We also invite them to our house to show what can be done. We already read/know about what Elizabeth Kolbert published and we try to act accordingly and to convince others if possible. We are fans of her and appreciate and try to support her activities.
Secondly, I work on a huge concept/vision which includes as much as available knowledge about sustainability. I am working together with about 50 friends on it since many years. We created a new, sustainable and holistic housing and living model called "balance4yourlife" which will provide new buildings, built in harmony with nature, with natural materials and modern technical opportunities to generate more (green) energy than we will need for a sustainable, but comfortable living. Within my new complex/new urban village all inhabitants will follow the necessary rules to help to stop the Climate Change - e.g. only e-mobility will be allowed within the complex. Furthermore, all inhabitants will lower their footprint and increase their handprint (Handprinter.org) and the whole community is going to create commons. I am positive that my contribution is going to counter at least a little bit what Dan Kahan at Yale 360° published:
"I went to interview John McCain, and he made this point. He was very honest and it was back in the straight-talking John McCain days, where he said, "It’s very unclear whether our political system can deal with a problem like this because usually we wait for a crisis and then we deal with the crisis, and that’s just not the way climate change works. You can’t deal with it once the crisis hits." I try to spread to the world the knowledge and the positive experience we make in Germany - e.g. while participating in this course and writing this homework. Fortunately, the community of same-minded is growing step by step. The German Government publishes the trends on risk awareness constantly like:
http://www.umweltbewusstsein.de/deutsch/2006/download/tendenzen_risikowahrnehmung.pdf. Maybe, this is a good example to be copied in other countries or the first and biggest staffing company http://greentechstaff.de (http://greentechstaff.de) is helping to provide jobs in sustainable thinking and acting companies. Women, Education and Social Change
Much gender inequality persists because of traditions that underestimate (or simply overlook) the capacities of girls and women. What can one do politically or socially to change these sorts of traditions while still working within the communities one hopes to change?
One of the biggest challenges is schooling girls in less developed countries. Educating girls is even more important than educating boys. An educated girl will soon be able to take care of her health and also of the health of her family members. She will be able to make her decision about birth control and will be informed about measures to prevent diseases. As a future mother girls will be able to offer her kids a better preschool education and most probably try to get education for her children, too. That is in my opinion the first and most important step towards positive change in India and Africa and a big step towards gender equality. As mentioned in the article of Jasmine Shah from Abdul Latif Jameel Police Action Lab also UN are going to take action with special focus on the Sub-Saharian countries.
As a German (woman) I would like to look back in history on the development of gender equality in my country. It was only in 1892 when the first women started to study at University of Tübingen, Germany and since then big changes started. When Angela Merkel became Chancellor of Germany in 2005 she was the first leading political woman in Germany's history. I would like to state that even in Germany gender inequality still exists. Most women are paid less than men and we still have much less women in leading positions than man. In order to progress towards gender equality I would like to describe three personal examples/experiences – I am acting in three fields but always with the same strategy:
In politics I am focused on women questions, I work on promoting women, on demanding support like Kindergartens for free, on change of education system and on women in leading positions.
In social fields, women are much more active than men (in the area where I live). Organizing Charity events for NGOs which also have a messages and communicate a clear target brings women into contact with many women and also influential men – and here starts the „game“ respective the chance for change on a personal level.
„Women in Capital“ is an interesting group where women share their knowledge and support each other. Also in other organizations like „Powerfrauen“ many, many others same-minded women are cooperating and promoting each other.
Coming to the end, I would like to tell you that I work with a strategy which is: information, discussion, concept and action PLUS NETWORKING, NETWORKING, NETWORKING and MEDIA. (Anette Pekrul)
